I wrote these haiku last night, right after a sichat mussar in the YU-BM by Rav Bar Chayim.
He was explaining that within R Akiva's students there was a less than ideal level of unity. It wasn't even that they did bad things to each other, but the unity wasn't what it was supposed to be. What happened to them was more a consequence than a punishment.
He gave the example of the human body and how when things are healthy/in sync viruses are fought off. But when there's - G-d forbid - an illness that shuts down the immune system the body becomes vulnerable even to slight infections...
