"Talent Is G-d Given Be Humble"

John Wooden loved the practicing element of coaching. He saw his job as ethical training. But then TV and other cultural factors made it different. Even, and perhaps especially, when he won championship after championship coaching UCLA he was less than thrilled. He once said, "I wish all my really good friends in coaching would win one national championship. And those I don't think highly of, I wish they would win several." On a related note when Freddie Goss was appointed coach of UC Riverside, Wooden said, "Freddie, this is no life." (Wooden said this even though Goss got the job in large part due to Wooden's recommendation."
