Mah Inyan Sandy Eitzel Open House?

The associate principal of my school said a nice thought today in light of the fallout from our recent storm. Why must Birchat HaGomel be said in front of a minyan - it's a personal brachah? The idea is that when we go through difficult times it's important for us to stand in our community, surrounded by support.
