You Are Mistaken

By Zelda

You are mistaken -
even in death's cradle
the fog did not dissolve.
Even when the end was near,
terrifyingly near,
I was miles and miles away
from the riddle.

Miles and miles away is adapted by Falk from the Aramaic parsah/parasangs. This brings to mind a talk I heard about after the fast, but missed.

At this presentation 2 writers offered very different takes on translation. They each had written a book on Rabi Yehudah HaLevi. They accentuated their difference in view by taking one poem and each translating it for the crowd. Their translations were distributed. Halkin asked if anyone noticed something bold he'd done. He left out one line! He left it flowed better that way. Scheindlin felt strongly that every line had to be grappled with and translated.
