the waves get to you after you've had a break on the shore and
realize you have to jump in,
at least for a minute,
and then in one of those before you know it moments
you're out in the deep water
fighting the feeling that you'll never get out
of the ocean alive and walk the warm sand again.

That SO describes how one feels sometimes, when something overwhelms. Very descriptive poem. How are the haikus coming? BTW, I have a question for you. My husband was told that for the upcoming high holidays he was assigned the honor of Gam Haole. This is a very conservative Sephardi Synagogue and actually, his grandfather was one of the founders. However, my husband was raised really Reform more than anything else, so his knowledge of all things ritual is not as deep as it should be. We understand that haola and haolam mean sort of "all the world" or "all things" but not sure what part of the liturgy Gam Haola is? Any light you could shed on this would be deeply appreciated! :o)

Thanks Trudy. I finished choosing and organizing my haiku. i need to commit to an intro and close it all up. If I meet with my friend who I'm supposed to meet with it could be submitted to Lulu today. Poo poo poo. Deep breath.
I'm not clear of the phrase you're asking about. My hunch is that it is some kind of an aliyah, being called up for the Torah reading. The one called up is called an oleh.
