"I know I'll often stop and think about them."

There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

I'm heading toward sleep, laptop in hand. James Taylor's haunting me. Last Sunday night at the Oscars, he sat alone strumming and singing In My Life, as images of dead actors (their most recent gig) flashed on the screen. Timing must have been tricky, as there were a few sound bites during the instrumental parts. It was hauntingly beautiful. I wonder if he was able to think about the words while he sang them. I suspect he had to just be in the zone.

The last time I was so moved by this song was shortly after my brother and sister in law married each other. I was visiting from Israel, home alone with my mother. I watched the wedding video, which opens with In My Life playing as pictures from their childhoods and lives up through their courtship appear and disappear. I cried. My mother wanted to know why I cried. I tried to explain.

Good night and G-d bless
mommy and daddy and all
the people I love
