M - thank you very much. I had an essay on this topic (which I've posted here or on parshapost)and thought I would just submit it to the paper. In the end I changed my mind and reworked it (with much appreciated help), took out a lot of personal essay parts and added in a lot more commentaries.
Nice piece. I once saw something similar to the part about working one's way out of the strongest influences first in a Jewish source: R' Tzadok, maybe?
