Susan Boyle Wins

One of the headlines just announced on the radio was, SUSAN BOYLE DOES NOT WIN BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT. I think she won. When the "winner" isn't mentioned by name, and the "loser" not winning is the news, don't you think the "loser" won?
My favorite headline from when Boyle first became a household name remains, IS SHE UGLY OR ARE WE?

She lost. A dance group called Diversity won.
As far as ugliness goes, there are recognized characteristics of physical beauty, and it makes no sense to pretend otherwise. I'd also mention that physical ugliness by no means implies a saintly disposition. From what I've read of Boyle, she has quite the temper.
I just re-read your post; only skimmed it the first time, and totally missed the point.
These talent shows seem so contrived to me. You can tell the hosts and backstage commentators are feeding us their melodramatic "reactions" to the contestants. I appreciated Susan Boyle's courage in going on stage the first time and doing a very nice job with her song, but her talent is modest (IMO) and clearly the "Wow" factor was along these lines: "Hey, that ugly frump can actually carry a tune." The song she sang last week (what was it? ugh) was pretty badly mangled in the beginning with some painful clunker notes. I'm happy for her that, relatively late in life, she has gotten some attention and will probably have fun with a recording contract and appearances.
Diversity left me flat. They weren't very good IMO at either dancing or gymnastics; I've seen high school cheerleading squads that are much better!
Oh, well. I'm an old humbug tonight.
Anne: About Diversity, I agree. I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. And the breathless remarks of appreciation! I mean, you did a dance, fine. Get over yourself.
