Only I - II
I've heard in the name of several Gedolim that American Jews finally learned what Shabbos is but still haven't discovered Erev Shabbos. I wish I kept Erev Shabbos properly - constantly, consistently, consciously preparing and awaiting all day - like a man in love.

For Shabbos I wait
for the Shabbos of my youth
for the Shabbos of the world to come
for the Shabbos twenty minutes from now
I wait for Shabbos

Says Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai:
After the work of creation was completed,
the Seventh day pleaded:
Master of the universe,
all that You've created is in couples;
to every day of the week You gave a mate;
only I was left alone.
And G-d answered:
The community of Israel will be your mate.

sounds like you did erev shabbos well this week!...may we all now begin to focus on erev Pesach and rid our chametz both inner and outer...shavuah tov!
I once heard Berel Wein describe his parents' Erev Shabbos. The table was set, everything was ready by noon. The house was quiet and relaxed, no one was rushing about, and they waited for Shabbos.
I just wrote a long reply to these two lovely coments and then it got lost due to a computer glitch. I don't have the koach to rewrite it. Gam zu letovah. Thanks.
I wish I had had a great Erev Shabbos. I was at work till after 4, then hit traffic and fell asleep on my driver/colleague on the way home. Then, because Shabbos starts late there was still time to fake it till I make it.
I hope to write more about chametz... May we all be blessed, as we so need to be so blessed.
Intersting citation of R. Wein, Kishke, I wonder if other readers have heard him live. He is a rare combination of quality content and great form.
In his latest book, The Sun Will Shine Again, Rabbi A. Twerski, writes about the idea of having Shabbos set up by chatzot. He tells the story of a woman with an ill son. The Chafeitz Chayim asks her to promise him that she'll be makpid to always have Shabbos set up by chatzot and to light candles well before shkiyah. He then blesses her . She keeps her word and the words of the Chafetz Chayim, that the son will be well - against all medical odds - come true. Rabbi Twerski says that if it worked as a segula to help a physical heart condition it will surely work as well for the heartbroken.
May we all be so blessed.
Yes, he is an excellent speaker; funny, wry, good content and stories, good delivery. I've heard him a number of times; years ago when I was a young bochur, and more recently. If you've heard him speak, you can probably hear him in your mind's ear, saying in that flat Chicago accent, "waiting for Shabbos." It made an impression on me then. Not that I'm very good about it myself. Ah, those long Friday afternoons, so full of opportunity to do all the things you've neglected.
Yes.
On a different (mei inyan le'inyan be'oto inyan) note; on one of his concert albums R Shlomo Carlebach has a story about performing at a Catholic school (he says - "Forgive me, but yes, I performed for non Jews") (he says all this in Hebrew, in Israel) and after the concert a girl came up to him and told him that she was Jewish (she was wearing a Jewish star necklace) and that her parents sent her there figuring they might as well speed up the assimilation process because they didn't care about Judaism at all. But, she told him that the person she was closest with in the world was her grandmother. She said that she would never marry someone unless her grandmother approved. Reb Shlomo asked what her grandmother did for a living, but it came out awkwardly, something like, "What is your grandmother doing?" The girl understood the question to be - what is she doing at this moment. She replied, "It's Thursday night, so she's awaiting Shabbos."
RNF - i have heard many reb shlomo stories, but not that one. thank you! Kishke ... I used to hear Rabbi Wein every Shabbos and yes, I can picture him and hear him saying those exact words! Kishke -do you have an email contact?

talk about hearing voices, i listened to that tape over and over about 20 years ago and can recite the story close to word for word in the Hebrew. it works for me much more-so than some of his more fanciful chasidish stories. he tells that story as an introduction to the song biglal avot (one of at least 3 tunes he has for those words).
He has three tunes for בגלל אבות? I know only one.
