I woke up to this insight: Modeh means to concede. Modeh Ani means, "I admit to You, G-d - that it is You, not I, that has gifted me with the return of my soul, with beneficence and great trust."

Understood this way, the statement of Modeh Ani is more than a simple thank you note to G-d. It is a wake up call to our selves. It is a declaration of the hardest truth to admit: I am not G-d.

It's worth noting that this is the first thing we are to say upon regaining consciousness: All that I have, starting with my soul, is a gift from G-d. Saying and hearing these words can really affect your day. May we be so blessed.
