Joe Jackson At Town Hall

j
So sometimes when the music stops, I seem to hear a distant sound
of waves and seagulls, football crowds and church bells.
And I wanna go back to my home town,
though I know it'll never be the same,
back to my home town, 'cause it's been so long,
and I'm wondering if it's still there...
h
- excerpted from Home Town by Joe Jackson
;
As I surveyed the crowd I jotted down the following: "Back in 1978 Joe Jackson fans thought they'd be teenagers forever. Now, in 2006, while no longer teenagers, they remain fans." At the end of the show Joe came back out and said that in 1978 when he released his first album he never dreamt that he'd even be alive in 2006, let alone performing to a sold out crowd in Town Hall. He seemed genuinely grateful, for everything.
-
The three guys in their business suits and goaties dancing in the front row said it all with enthusiasm. I'd like to believe that they were much older than me. I appreciate my brother's comment that I may have been the youngest audience member there. But if that's so, it was by a metaphorical hair. These men were transformed back to the hometowns, back to their youth. And Joe Jackson did that for them.
Q
The talent of this man is remarkable. His playing and singing is in its own realm. He played together with bassist Graham Maby and drummer Dave Houghton (pointing out that "yes it is possible to make good music without guitar"). These are the original members of his band that broke up in 1980, and they sound like it's just a minute later. They sing and play in such an in synch way that it's like they're one unit (though he stands out, and made that clear by starting and ending on stage alone).
w
There is something about Joe Jackson and his bandmates that is a cut above. I am grateful to have seen this show with my brother (HSLABW), in our first outing like this since The Sunshine Boys with Randall and Klugman. Good night and G-d bless.

TWENTY FOUR HOURS OF NO BLOG

Shabbat is coming
Twenty four hours of no blog
Time to rest our minds

Motzaei Shabbat
Wine, spice, havdalah candle
Wonder what I'll write?

Time to let it go
Twenty four hours of no blog
The candles await

Now it's really time
Don't go into the eighteen
Where's the Dvar Torah

I'm 40 and think Joe Jackson was an awesome breath of musical fresh air in a time of Disco and Punk rock.

I hope I get to see him someday, but fear the ticket prices will be the usual, utterly ridiculous figure for even the best entertainer.

Glad you had a good time. He's truly a great songwriter.

Thanks to all who read and commented. Nice haiku chain Bob. Do you have your own blog (feel free to take the fifth)?

Joe Jackson had three albums with his band between 1978-1980. Then they split and he did a lot on his own, never stopping, but never hitting the same popularity as the band. In 2003 he reunited with the band and is continuing with that.

Michael - I'm more impressed with the music than the lyrics, but the whole package is great. The songs are still with me from the other night - songs I vaguely remembered and forgot how top level they were like, What You Want.

Concerts are crazy expensive, one of several reasons why I can count the amount of concerts I've seen on one (ok, two) hand(s).

I saw Joe on Friday night. Great show! Saw him over 15 yrs ago & it seems like there was no change in his voice, it's still that good.

Thanks anonymous. I was wondering if anyone else who saw him might appear. I'm surprised that I've been unable to find any reviews of this appearance.

He has a great voice and gives it his all. For some notes he has to stretch open his mouth in what seems to me like a unique manner.

My brother was dissapointed that he didn't do - Sunday Papers or Look Sharp. Did he do them on Friday night?

I noticed that also with the mouth. I know he didn't do Sunday Papers and I don't think he did Look Sharp either.

You have to see him live, he is that good.

Sorry, can't help you with this one. I was in one of the last rows. I paid more attention to Maby (bass) than Noughton (drummer).

I've seen Joe on each of his tours for the past 7 years. Saw him a few weeks back in Seattle.

Who would'a thunk that I'd find a description of one of his shows on your blog, after all these years Neil...
