Maayan was on the right track and voice a reason ironed out the 3 right answers for 5. M got the watershed event (I wonder if that's where the phrase comes from?) and the more faous half of 4. V of R got #1. Half of 4 left. And 3, which is relevant today.

I'm not familiar with such a story re Habakuk. There's a midrashic source that says that Moshe did this.

Check out the Breita on Taanit chaf gimel, amud aleph, line 13-19. And yes gee gee = gg, just wanted to use my full name for effect or is that affect.

GG, amazing. This is one of those cases where something gets misquoted or edited a certain way until the original is neglected and sounds wrong. It's right there! But everyone knows Choni, and Chabkuk not so much.

For anyone following this thread still here's a bonus Torah Quiz Q that fits with this last exchange:

Oh no...you set a trap for me and I fell right in. I'm too tired. I'll do the lazy thing and wait for one of your talmidei chachamim to give the right answer.

The answer is .... Anashim.... I had to look it up for myself. Okay, so what's the Rashi and Tosefot on that? Since you knew that some unasuming old soul would fall into your trap you must have an explanation as to why it is Anashim and not Ish. Waiting to hear.....boB

Okay, I'm feeling a bit forgotten all the way down here, so I'll give a shot at it. Maybe in a place where there are no people you are alone. When you are alone, it is very easy to pretend that no one sees what you are doing. Therefore you could feel depressed or even worse allowed to do things that you wouldn't be proud of doing publicly. Therefore B'akom sheen anashim, in a place where there are no people try to be a man (aka. amentsh), because we are never really alone. HKBK is always with us and watching us. What do you think?

Bob, my noght owl friend (or maybe you're just in a different time zone)here's the story.

I quoted this in the teacher's room. And a colleague made a big deal that I quoted it wrong. So I looked it up and she was right. She knew this because her fathe rloves correcting people on that. But neither she nor her fathe rhad a thought on why it's anashim they just like telling everyone that it is.

I liked your thought very much. I hope I remember it and share it. I have a thought -

If there's not even one ish at all then it goes without saying that you need to be careful, but if there are some that are up to par and some that aren't then you may slip while still thinking that you're in the good group, so you need to be warned. I think we may be understanding the words differently. And I think that I like yours better.

I like yours too, but I think that I'm not understanding the words the same as you are. Where does it say that there are two groups? If it is a place that has no anashim then I would think that there's either no one (as per my original thought) or a group of non-anashim - meaning the antithesis of mentsches. But if it says sheEIN anashim then I sort of read it like it can't be two groups. But now it is a GROUP of reshaim so I really have to try to be an Ish. Kindof like group pressure. I'm rambling....so...I await your late night thoughts. boB
