first generations

By Aaron E. Bulman

I know I maybe make you ashamed
like talking outloud in an elevator
in a language I don't know so good
and the strangers they turn and they stare

until you want to hide
or to pretend you don't know me

and I want to slap you in the face
and I want to remind you about respect
and I have to clear my throat
and I have to shake my head

because in this country it's different

and you will not say i'm sorry in front of me
and you will only say i'm sorry later on
much later on when it's too late
but you will say i'm sorry
in the language I do not know so good

and I will understand
but more important
so will you

Aaron wrote it about his parents. One of the reasons he hesitated regarding aliyah (actually he said it was THE reason) was that he didn't want to have that language situation regarding his kids and the place, that awkwardness that his parents had.
