Ve'Achalta

This Shabbos I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Henry Hersh. While a dentist by proffession, Dr. Hirsch's passion is Jewish thought. It was with him that I studied the ideas that I wrote about for VaEtchanan. He has gone through all of the books of the Maharal as well as the Moreh Nevuchim, Kuzari, and much more. He cited the following idea to me following mincha tonight.

In next wek's parsha (Devarim 7:16) we read, "Ve'Achalta Et Kol HaAmim Asher Hashem Elokecha Notein Lach." This is generally translated to mean that were were commanded to destroy the nations whose land we were given. But the Maharal focuses on the true meaning of the word ve'achalta, which is "and you will eat." He says that we are told to take in the good, even from those nations that we are commanded to destroy.
