Shades Of Grey
It seems like a second ago that I told my friend Martin about Shades of Gray. It was so long ago that there was no internet. He was so taken by the song that he wanted the lyrics. And so he went to one library that ordered it from another special music library.
The song was a hit for The Monkees. The team who wrote it are the masterminds behind many great well known songs such as You've Lost That Loving Feeling and On Broadway. I find this song to be meaningful and true.
Shades Of Gray
By Barry Mann and Cyntha Weil
When the world and I were young,
Just yesterday.
Live was such a simple game,
A child could play.
It was easy then to tell right from wrong.
Easy then to tell weak from strong.
When a man should stand and fight,
Or just go along.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
I remember when the answers seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt or tasted fear.
It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate,
The foolish from the wise.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
[Instumental interlude]
It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share.
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care.
But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
Only shades of gray.

You're not going to believe this but this was my favorite song from the time I was 6 years old until well into my 30s (yes, I was introduced to the Monkees version of it) still and all, it's one of my favorites to this day.
I believe you. It's a great, haunting, true song. One of my favorites too. (And one of the only Monkees songs that Peter does the lead vocal on.) Billy Joel has a song by the same name, not as good.
A wise rabbi once said, if G-d intended everything to be black and white he wouldn't have created colors.
