As Tzom Gedaliah Ebbs Away
Another Tzom Gedaliah, another milestone in life, in another year starting to go by (bye?). Chazal say that that fasting is a replacement of a korban through the flesh we shed:
Post Rosh haShanah
Man offers a sacrifice
Fast for forgiveness
I stumbled upon a thought today - that the name of Gedaliah and fasting on his day is related to our work to make G-d's name greater in this world.
I recently heard a pre Yom Kippur thought, found in Rishonim. We don't say a brachah of the teshuvah we do on Yom Kippur because it is literally a mitzvah habah be'aveirah. On a related note the reason we don't say a brachah on the meal of Erev Yom Kippur may be that it's a hechsher mitzvah (though it may be a displaced Yom Tov meal and thus a mitzvah in and of itself).
Soon the fast will be over and we will be on the after side. May this fast help us all. May we be blessed with Teshuvah Sheleimah.
