I don't know. I thought the letter was pretty funny too, and was probably intended that way.

I liked both the cartoon and the letter. As long as you read them in that order, the joke isn't spoiled (at least for me!).

I meant more that when someone tells a joke and someone else interrupts or even follows up with a similar kind of literal minded technical correction - it's a certain personality type that does that. It doesn't make the joke better to clarify technical points that need not be clarified for the joke to work.

Jut curious Kishke and Anne - I hada hard time reading the letter due to the type size - how was that for you?

You click on the picture and it opens in its own window. You then click on the picture again and it becomes bigger. (The cursor becomes a plus sign to indicate that this is possible.)

that was really helpful, as a general rule, I really appreciate it.

I reread it and am pretty sure the guy was not joking. Even if he was , what struck me is how often people say things like that and are not kidding (even though if called on anything - I was kidding is the good old defense).

The thing is that this is exactly the type of letter that would be written as a joke, i.e. as a parody of an anal-retentive obsessing on some unimportant detail and missing the point. If it's real, it's sad (but still a bit funny); if it's a joke, it's hilarious. Hard to tell, but I vote joke. The line about great advice gives it away.
