During the school year before last I visited a colleague's classroom just as class ended. A student I'd never met before was sitting, working on a drawing. It was impressive and I asked who it was. She replied that it was Rufus Wainright. To her surprise I knew who that was, knew specific songs of his, who his parents were. We spoke about favorite songs like Beauty Mark and his mother's I Eat Dinner, which he had done with her on occasion. And from there we started talking regularly about Torah, Israel, life after senior year. Recently I saw said student, now returned from Israel and very into learning and also - still, Rufus. She shared that she saw him in concert right after his mother passed. And, she said, here was this cool, popular singer commanding the stage. And yet, all she saw was a little boy who'd lost his mommy. Sigh.
